Trailer inspections are also required per federal regulation §396.17 - commercial motor vehicle includes each vehicle in a combination vehicle. For example semitrailers and a converter dolly must each be inspected.
All major trailer systems including suspension, coupling devices, brakes, trailer wheels, hubs, and axles, the trailer frame and of course all lights must be in proper working and safe condition.
